I think you are asking some very good questions. Unfortunately, I don't know the answers either. I do agree with the poster who said this is a good reason not to judge others.

Our JW Friend told by Elder "Satan is using a Pedophile to Break your Faith"
by flipper ini was given permission by a jw friend of my wife and me to post this experience.
she's anonymous and posts on the board.
she is married to a witness still but is fighting on behalf of children in her congregation to not be a next victim of a pedophile who attends her congregation.

One of the best things the JWs could do is make sure they are well educated on how to spot inappropriate behavior. As alluded to earlier, inapropriate touching and seeing how far he can get is one of the first moves a pedophile will make to try to set up a situation where he can offend again. ALL Jws should be aware of this so they can identify and prevent problems before they get very far.
The Catholic Church has really learned their lesson from their past problems. The JWs could learn from them. They now have mandatory films and classes for all parishioners who deal with children or other vulnerable populations through the church. Since JWs do this in field service, all of their publishers should be educated too. And the posters who said call the police first are right. Consulting with elders and NY on how to best prevent a scandal and then do only what they are legally "required" to do is pitiful and creates an environment that allows these problems to flourish.
If the WT was really concerned about preventing scandal, they would implement reforms as soon as possible. Refusing to do so not only allows their members to be hurt, it also ruins their own reputation and increases their own risk. The WT is really creating their own problems in handling this issue.

Richard Nixon on Homosexuality, Fashion, and "All In The Family"

Mr. Fiorini and I went to see Frost/Nixon last night so this thread really caught my eye. The film was quite good by the way.
Nixon's last statement on the YouTube clip about how they will be better at running things than people from the left because they are honest is just incredible. I am always amazed at people's ability to believe their own lies, especially about themselves.
If you were a fly on the wall, you could hear some members of the GB say the same: even though our doctrines aren't always right and some of our prophecies didn't actually turn out to be true, we are God's chosen organization because we are more honest, sincere, accurate (take your pick) than "false religion."

Mom says "You will die at Armageddon" - good replies?
by serendipity inmy mother retired from her full-time job recently and has started attending meetings again.
she also has plenty of time to think about her wayward children, including me.
one night, we were talking and she asked me, again, why i wasn't going to meetings.

I loved your comment about trusting God's judgement of you. I think that the WT has used the "fear of God" for far too long to their advantage. Once we overcome that, we are out of the WT for good.

Brothers in her Cong. question if my mum is "really" anionted!? Why?
by Witness 007 ini don't get this...my mum pioneered for 25 years and in the last few years she at 69 is claiming to be anionted and taking emblems.....well you should see the back stabbing!
some claim she isn't since she doesn't work at bethel or contribute to the litrature???
it becomes a big debate, is she or not?

When I was in, I also knew some, even elders, who questioned the claims of those who said they were annointed. I wonder if this is because the previous belief was that the annointed would be diminishing in number, not increasing. If so, an increase in annointed threatens their belief that "the end is near," causing them distress.
I understand that teaching has been adjusted somewhat since I left. But I wonder how much the R & F really change what they believe every time there is a 2 or 3 sentence comment buried in a WT paragraph making changes in the doctrines.

Wow! I will keep him in my prayers.
Having lost my JW family too, I know exactly how much it costs to leave the WT. But as much as I miss my family, I would never go back. Leaving the mind control cult of the WT is still the best thing I ever did. For all the pain he is suffering, it looks like he feels the same.
My best wishes to him!

Those words were written thousands of years ago by someone from a very different culture and way of thinking than we are used to. Previous societies (and a few current ones) saw their lives as much more subject to fate than we modern Westerners do. The idea that we can control our own destiny is relatively modern and would not have occurred to the writer of that scripture.

ATJ said, "Are they consolidating as much as they can before they spring a major adjustment in a dogma that could cause many contributing members to leave?"
I think this is a good question to ask. They know that 2014 is just 5 short years away. Past instances of followers leaving over false prophesies can't be far from their minds. They also must be suffering, as other religions are, from the current economic crisis. It seems to me that they are trying to get their financial ducks in a row in anticipation of a serious drop in income.

I agree with the posters who suggested that you maintain a good rapport with your son and not view the situation as adversarial. However, I don't think that means you can't help your son to find his way out of the cult sooner than later.
I've mentioned it on this site before. But in case you missed it, a very good book on the subject of helping loved ones out of a cult is Steven Hassan's "Releasing the Bonds: Helping People to Think for Themselves." He, too, recommends building rapport and avoiding an adversarial approach.
I thought the book was very insightful and filled with good suggestions that can be used with members of any cult, including JWs which are specifically mentioned. Whether your son eventually leaves the WT or not, the suggestions in the book will not harm your relationship with him.
If you can't find it elsewhere, you can order it from the Free Minds website.
